Sports Explain The World
CAPTAINS OF UKRAINE
Captains of Ukraine is not a war story. It is a lived, elusive conspiracy that is never fully revealed.
War envelops these footballers without the need for gunfire. It is there, like the uncomfortable whisper that everyone hears, yet no one knows where it comes from because power is never hidden; it expands and reinforces itself as much as in times of war.
Invisible but latent, war is not only fought on the front. Transformed into pieces of military propaganda, these young men are not heroes, rather pawns trapped in a web of secrets from which no one emerges unscathed.

—Dani, there's something that's bothering me. I saw something that isn't working.
—I think I know what you're going to say… The enlistment!
—Exactly! There's a very abrupt narrative jump.
—Yeah. We go too quickly from them being soccer players to being soldiers.
—Exactly.
—There's no character development, it's not believable. They're being sent to the army of a country at war!
—We have Vasili and Misha's interviews.
—Yeah, that's descriptive, but we're not seeing their emotions, Matt.
—We need to develop the enlistment part.
—The thing is we don't have material, we can only steal those 3 shots of the commissioner and you see how short they are.
—We need to somehow show the meeting between these two entities, the army and the team.
—And the reaction of the soccer players, they're going to enlist in an army at war!
—Exactly! It's reactions that we really need.
—Where do we have reactions?
—In the locker room, when they're watching the training videos.
—Perfect! Yeah, I remember, Misha and some younger guys...
—But they're watching training footage.
—That's what they'll see, but of war.
